Español II: La posesión

La posesión How to say who owns what.
1. “The thing of the owner”
In Spanish we DO NOT USE an apostrophe to indicate possession.
Instead we use the formula: THE “thing” OF “the owner”
Examples:
My grandmother’s house –
La casa DE mi abuela
Our friend’s car -
El carro DE nuestros amigos.

2.My book, your pencil…
Using possessive adjectives = 3 things to keep in mind:
(A) First part of the word reflects the owner
(B) Second part(ending) reflects the possession.
(C) WORD ORDER – these come BEFORE the noun
EX. Es mi libro; Son mis libros
mi(s) nuestro/a; nuestros/as
tu(s) vuestro/a; vuestros/as
su(s)* su(s)

* To clarify, go back to the ____ de _owner_ formula

3. It’s MINE!
STRESSED Possessive Adjectives = 4 forms for each “person”. The speaker is STRESSING WHO owns the item.
3 things to remember:
(A)First part of the word reflects the owner
(B) Second part (ending) reflects the possession.
(C) WORD ORDER – these come AFTER the noun.
Stressed Possesive Adjectives:
Mío/mía/míos/mías
Tuyo…
Suyo…
Nuestro…
Vuestro…
Suyo…

Examples:
Es la casa nuestra = It's OUR house (as in NOT yours).
Son los amigos tuyos = They're YOUR friends (not mine).
