1. Warm-up: Sentence translation practice using the verbs and vocabulary from lesson 2B
2. More practice with Estar & Hay in sentences.
3. Pronunciation practice = La letra "g" - see page 113. I also shared a phonetics chart with spelling changes for the hard g sound next to e or i.
4. Fondo Cultural, page 113. We read about Sports and Physical Education schools in Spanish-speaking countries.
5. We read about schools - comparing school culture and the numbers of school days in many countries around the world with the United States. See "Perspectivas" page 116.
6. We corrected our homework - Repaso #1 - Helping us get ready for the lesson test tomorrow.
7. We reviewed the corrections on the lesson and vocabulary tests from lesson 2A - all make-ups finally completed/or time ran out. I also gave some test-taking tips.
8. We began our homework handout over "Hay" versus "Estar".

1.SER versus ESTAR + HAY = NOTES re:The forms and uses of these verbs that are all covered by "to be" in English. See me, or get notes from one of your study buddies.
Then we did some practice writing sentences with these.

2. Homework Review & Corrections: Vocabulary, Prepositions of Place & Estar -
Workbook pages 41, 43 & 45; Textbook page 107, Activity 10.

3. Preposition of Place Poem: First we practiced in our groups of 3s, and then each group performed for the class.

4. I checked off TEXT BOOK COVERS, and awarded prizes to those who decorated theirs Artistically and/or with Spanish.

5. Handout: 20 points can be yours! (1) Keep your Text covered and (2) Keep a well-organized notebook. Instructions on How to Organize Your Notebook. - Have this done by Monday, to start earning full points.

6. MOVIE TIME - we filled our botella! - I made "Palomitas de maíz" and we watched more of Jorge, el curioso (Curious George, in Spanish). We got started about 5 minutes behind schedule, so I'll give you another 10!

1. Activities 4& 5 page 106: Listening, writing and speaking practice about the drawing of the two guys in the clothing store. (Vocabulary Input/Output)

2. Period 4 watched and Period 2 reviewed the Video Historia, pp. 104-105 + Homework correction/review - Activity 3, page 105:Comprehension questions.

3. Fondo cultural - re: shoe sizes in Spain and Mexico - we figured out what size we wear in Spain - little review of numbers w/ culture.

4. Took test over the vocabulary and written numbers on pages 98 & 99.

5. Preterit Verb Flashcards - HANDOUT - we practiced conjugation of regular preterit verbs, using these individual study cards.

6. Body vocabulary: In small groups students labeled a "model", using the terms provided on a handout.

1. Warm-up: Vocabulary practice - labeling the items numbered in the drawing of a classroom. See workbook page 40.

2. Partner Vocabulary game - El vocabulario revuelto (see handouts): Which partner can recognize the word and find it on the page with scattered vocabulary written all over it? The kids had a lot of fun with this, and did a good job practicing their new words. I enjoyed it, too!

3. ESTAR - see page 107, in your textbook. We practiced all 6 forms of the verb, and read the information about it - How and WHEN to use it. We also watched the Gram Activa DVD and then wrote out Actividad 9, page 107, filling-in the forms of ESTAR. Everyone wrote out the whole conversation to practice Spanish punctuation - How good are you at writing the "upside down" question and exclamation marks?

4. Prepositions of place - words that say WHERE something IS LOCATED in relationship to something else. We practiced the words AND them did several practices of the POEM we have to KNOW for TOMORROW. The gestures really seem to help us remember the words! Don't forget you have the picture handout BUT the we've changed the words and gestures for Word & photo #3 (Delante - out/ Al lado - in).

5. I demonstrated how to make a cover for your text book - those who brought paper grocery bags made theirs along with my demonstration.

1. Precaliento: Recycle/Review of Daily Routine reflexive verbs from 2A into el pretérito. Students wrote out 5-10 sentences about how they got ready for school this morning, using their new verb form (simple past tense) and included grooming articles.

2. El pretérito:

(A) Reviewed the warm-up - converting present tense to preterite.
(B) Reviewed the time expressions that indicate the preterite - QUIZ on these on MONDAY!
(C) Corrected last night's homework - completing the verb grid begun in class.
(D) Partner verb drills - Tú / yo questions/answers (Did you ...? I did).
(E) Whole class verb drills - ball toss, conjugation game.
(F) NEW STUDY REFERENCE PACKET - EL PRETERITO: Took notes over the first page and some of the second. Keep this as a ready study aid.
(G) Watched the Gram Activa DVD - grammar explanation - see text page 110.
(H) Activity 13, page 110 - completing the thank-you note to abuelita with the correct form of the pretértio.

3. New vocabulary practice:

(A) Reviewed/practiced pronunciation of the vocabulary prepared as homework (p.124)

(A) I introduced the vocabulary on page 98 about stores using examples and flashcards.
(B) I shared a series of small books about colors to review those.


4. Vocabulary practice:

(A)Students wrote out their own vocabulary sheet of all 40 vocabulary items on page 98.
(B) Exercise 1, page 98 - part 1: Creating sentences by putting together an element from each of the vocabulary categories.

Period 4: Got to watch a few more minutes of the movie, Ice Age - en español.

3. Handout: Capítulo 14 – Diagramming. Listening comprehension re: people's daily routine. You'll draw lines connecting the different elements described.
4 – A. The reverse of Capítulo 14 = Capítulo 15. FIRST: Review the names of the grooming articles and the prepositions of place. THEN, partner up and have a conversation.

6. We read pages 90-91 in the text book, about a special school program in Costa Rica, and then answered comprehension questions about it. Students turned these in before leaving.

1. Warm-up: Fill-in Vocabulary Practice - Half of the vocabulary from page 96.

2. Fondo Culturales & Connections with Latin, Español e Inglés - Read the cultural information on pages 80-81. English taught in Latin American Schools, Cognates between Spanish and English with common Latin roots, The Roman Empire and its influence in Spain - re: language, architecture.

3. VERBS!
(A) We took more NOTES over "operational terms" for verbs - Infinitive & Conjugation.
(B) Pages 86-87: Activities 16, 17, 18 & 19
- Talking about what activities we do ourselves; Asking/answering others about what s/he does; Comparing what WE both do. We used the graphic organizer - Venn Diagram to compare/contrast these activities all the while PRACTICING CONJUGATIONS OF -AR VERBS.

4. Homework corrections - Workbook pages 35-36 (Subject Pronouns & Verb Conjugations).

1. Fondo cultural - page 79: Clothing appropriate for parties. We discussed what the kids where here for their friend's parties.

2. Ser versus Estar - reviewed forms, brainstormed uses, took notes, read the book- pg. 86, watched the GramActiva, and then did ACTIVIDAD 19 - pg. 86.

3. La rutina diaria - practicing using reflexive verbs to talk about our daily schedules: ENCUESTA - we answered questions about our own habits, and then interviewed up to 4 other people. Period 2 also listened to one of those "rap-like" songs about María's typical day - Esto es lo que hago. (Lonnie Dai Zovi - Cantos, Ritmos y Rimas - Vibrante Press)

4. Homework correction - reviewed the vocabulary exercises in the workbook.

5. Stressed Possessives - It's MINE!. We reviewed the regular possessives (see the Recuerdas? box on page 88) and then launched into these possessives that EMPHASIZE the ownership. Period 4 also did Activity 22, page 88.

1. Warm-up:
(A) Ordinal numbers - HANDOUT. Practicing first, second, third for BOTH classes and the birth order of the kids in a large family.
(B) Recognizing the right verb to go in a sentence - meaning and form of verb.

2. Reviewed the expectations for In-class Performance Grades - referring to the handout from the beginning of the quarter. These are the points that show up on eSIS as Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, etc.

3. VERB FLASH CARDS! White set = Subject Pronouns; Blue set = -AR Verb stems; Yellow set = -AR Verb endings. Students cut out their own sets; we reviewed the meanings of each of the cards - students writing these on the reverse.

4. JUEGO
I wrote mini sentences on the white board and students put their translated them to Spanish using their flash cards matching up the subject pronoun + verb stem + verb ending.

5. Home work corrections - Work book and -AR Verb grid.

6. Partner question/answer practice with YO and Tú forms of the verbs:
¿Hablas? …Sí, hablo. ¿Bailas?...Sí, bailo. etc.

1. Warm-up: Vocabulary practice of clothing and body = "Pruebita #2" & Matching photos with description (blue handout)

2. Video Historia - vocabulary and grammar in context - DVD of script on pages 76 & 77. We watched the video, then read the script aloud with a partner. Last we wrote out the answers to the comprehension questions in Actividad 3, page 77.

3. Los artículos del tocador - grooming articles. I placed items under the doc camera and students identified them. Next partners wrote out Actividad 4, page 78, saying what Margarita is using, and for what purpose, to get ready for her cousin's wedding.

5. Review of the vocabulary test 1B - all make-ups are finally completed!

5. Mi cuerpo - listening comprehension: filling-in the missing words of the song about our body.

1. Warm-ups:
(A) Scrambled words - activities;
(B) Copy and complete the sentences - 2A vocabulary in context.
I stamped the students' Mi familia booklets while they worked on these activities.

2. Text book & DVD: Video Historia - pp. 76 & 77. Watched the next installment of our DVD - this time the girls in Mexico share their schedules. Next students read the script aloud and then answered comprehension questions - we went over it together when we were all done.

3. -AR VERB CONJUGATIONS: We watched a video (Gram Activa, referred to our text books (page 84), sang a couple of songs (I am YO & -AR Verbs) and then practiced changing the dictionary form (infinitive) to forms that show WHO is doing the action on a VERB GRID HANDOUT.

We ADDED the verb SER to the bottom of our VERB GRIDS - along with TENER = both members of the -ER verb group.

Students shared their family books with one another and then turned them in at the end of the class period.

TAREA:
1. FINISH the -AR VERB GRID we began today in class.
2. WORKBOOK pages 31 & 32 - practicing the vocabulary for 2A

Period 2 wrote out warm-up sentence; Period 4 did both Act. 4 & the sentences.

2. Introduced 2A Vocabulary in context - Reading and Listening Practice - pages 74 & 75. And then Two comprehension Activities: 1 & 2.

3. Reflexive Verbs - Review of the forms - See page 80. Corrected the verb grid homework and then played a review ball toss conjugation game.

4. Packet - Parts of the Body & Clothing. We went over the vocabulary on the first page and top of the second, then did the rest of the exercises on the second page.

1. Started Lesson 2A: Reviewed the lesson's goals on page 73 - talking about our school day.

2. Pages 74-75: We listened to the lesson opener while we read along in our books. We also practiced pronouncing the vocabulary.

3. Got a new vocabulary list - lots of review words from what we've learned this quarter AND new words, too. We practiced these a lot!

4. Reading and writing practice, Page 78:
(A) Activity 4: Reading a schedule from an Arts School in Querétaro, Mx. students wrote out answers to questions. We went over these all together afterwards.
(B) Activity 5: Students made a chart of their own daily schedule AND filled it in.
We TURNED these papers in.

5. Reviewed SUBJECT PRONOUNS
- These will help us use VERBS.
(A) the 4 ways to say "YOU" in Spanish: Tú; usted (Ud.); Vosotros/as; ustedes (Uds.)
(B) ALL 10 of the subject pronouns - practiced identifying them using picture flashcards.
6. Correction/Review - Mi familia - Prewrite/homework.
7. Gave LOTS of new vocabulary - PETS.
Tarea:
1. Make your MI FAMILIA sing the "book" handout
The CRITERIA for "book":
(A) Minimum of 5 people/pets paragraphs(The fill-in descriptions)- Yourself, at least 1 male and at least 1 female relative (other than yourself)
(B) The COVER had a drawing of ALL described in your book.
(C) Each person/pet described has his/her own picture that relates to your description of him/her.
(D) Be SURE to make the adjectives agree with the person/pet described.

1. Warm-up "practice quiz" - multiple choice, practicing our comprehension of the body and clothing vocabulary.

2. Added to our vocabulary notes re: accessories. See separate blog post + blue 2-sided handout: labeled drawings of a man and a woman's accessories.

3. Text pages 70 -71: Reviewed Activity 1 (Tarea + vocabulary list fill-in).
Talked about verb phrases using 2 verbs together = 2nd verb stays in the infinitive form (-ar, -er, -ir). Period 2 did activity 4, speaking with a partner.

4. New quia games vocabulary list - Pages 70 & 71. Corrected "las" calcetines to "los" calcetines AND added "Acabar + de + infinitive" to end = To just have ___.

5. Introduced REFLEXIVE VERBS
- I gave a demonstration using a couple of dolls and some grooming articles showing how one can do things for others (non-reflexive) and for oneself (reflexive). We looked at the Gram Activa, explaining reflexive verbs. SEE text page 80.

6. REFLEXIVE VERB GRID: we wrote in the meanings of ONLY the 15 reflexive verbs on page 96 (1st set of words). Next we practiced conjugating these verbs - USING BOTH the REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS and the REGULAR CONJUGATIONS of the verbs (once the -se is removed from the ending). Example: Bañarse. SE goes to ME for YO. Then take the Bañar and make it into a regular yo -ar verb: baño. Together = me baño means I bathe myself.

Tarea:
1. Make flashcards of the 15 reflexive verbs in the first group of the vocabulary on page 96. (All of the verbs EXCEPT 'pedir prestado/a')
2. Write these 15 verbs' meanings on the verb grid (if you didn't in class) AND conjugate them in their reflexive verb form.

1. Review activities - to get us ready for the test:
(A) Definite/Indefinite Articles: individual flash cards. I gave a "prompt" using one of the nouns we've learned up to now in English and the students confirmed its meaning in Spanish. Then I held up a flashcard of that noun and said along either "a / an" or "the". The students then held up the appropriate article for the given noun.
(B) Dedos - like "Twister" only with your ten fingers on a single sheet of paper and playing against your seat partner. The paper is gridded and each square has a separate vocabulary item. Which ever partner places his/her finger on the requested word first wins the square...BUT to keep it, s/he has to keep a finger on the square as the game progresses.
(C) Subject Pronouns and the forms of SER - like the "Rowdy Review" we played yesterday - which partner can find and circle the word first?
(D) Homework corrections - WAVA packet pp. 27 & 28: Putting it all together!

2. Took Lesson 1B Exam. This took the rest of the class period.

TAREA - I recommend you go to Japan Night tonight in the commons from 5:30 to 8:00. There's FOOD, FUN cultural activities AND it's FREE!

1. "Rowdy Vocabulary Review" - partner vocabulary review game - who can find the word first among the randomly scattered vocabulary words their game sheet?

2. See and Hear partner conversation - Listen for when you hear your cue (in the column with the ear drawn at the top, and then say what's printed next to it in the column with the mouth drawn at the top. Put it all together and create a conversation with your partner incorporating all of the vocabulary and grammar from lesson 1B!

3. Took Vocabulary 1B Test.

4. Poema en diamante - following the model, students wrote their own personal traits poem and then shared them with one another in groups of 3s.

5. Vamos al río - Review board game, preparing for tomorrow's Lesson 1B Exam.

(1) Complete pages 27 & 28 in the white WAVA activities packet.
(2) STUDY! Lesson 1B test tomorrow.
