5. Giving and Following Game: Working in partners students took turns reading 4 different sets of directions and following them on a map of the school to see if they ended up where I intended.

We reviewed these little words that go before the verb to indicate FOR WHOM the action is being done. Example I invite you.

Precaliento:
Finding the 10 hidden ghosts in the house - practicing prepositions of place, the rooms of the house and furnishings.

Rima:
Took the written quiz over the words to the prepositions poem.
Organized into groups.
Presented the poem to the class in small groups.

Commands - I introduced Formal (direct) Commands = see the NEW BLUE PACKET
Direct Commands = Directly asking "YOU" to do something. This can be directed to either usted (Ud.) OR useded (Uds.).
We went over the forms and practiced conjugation several of them - Completed through the second page.

Corrected the homework on the Golden Handout, Realidades 2, 3B, pp. 154-155

Tarea:
Please make vocabulary flash cards for the items on page 180 (but NOT the Structures - unless you want to :>)

Listening comprehension practice:
Handout Diagraming, ¿Cómo van?: 3 columns of Names, Pictures of Places and Pictures of modes of transportation. As I said who went where and how s/he got there, students connected the elements, diagramming what was said. Then they wrote out the sentences to match what they drew.

Vocabulary practice:
1. Places in the town: We used the reverse of the previous handout to review the list of 20 places typical to a town.

2. Homework corrections/review:
a. Green Vocabulary packet - re: pp. 154-155 (prepositions of place and modes of transportation.
b. Blue Practice Workbook Packet, 3B-B: Part 1 = modes of transport, part 2 = Yo-go verbs.

3. Librito: Cómo nos transportamos - Using the document camera, I showed this small book about the history of modes of transportation I bought in Mexico.

La rima: Practicing prepositions of place and directional adverbs. We practiced all together, and then in our small groups = Getting ready for our presentations tomorrow!

Golden Handout: Realidades 2, 3B pp.154-155
Review of the vocabulary and structures of this mini-lesson before we begin 3B.

Tarea:
1. Be ready for the RIMA test and oral tomorrow. Be able to write out all of the words, spelled accurately, and then say the poem with your group. Forgot your copy? See yesterday's blog posting.
2. Complete the golden handout for pp.154-155.
3. Blue handout, ¿Adónde vas?
Write 10 SENTENCES, answering the question, ¿Cuándo vas?.
Select 10 items for the list of 20 places in a city, and use a different one and a different answer to when you go there for each sentence.
To answer “Cuándo vas” you could say (a) a time of day (b) a specific day of the week (c) a month of the year or (d) a season of the year.

Reviewed for the test by correcting the EXTRA CREDIT homework: practicing the verbs and vocabulary in sentences - both in the present and preterite tenses.

Took 3A Lesson Test:
(1) Vocabulary Spelling test, page 152
(2) Recognition Chapter Test with a Short-Answer Written section.

I introduced the prepositions of place and their related adverbs - directional motions - with the rhyme:
Izquierda, Derecha
Delante, Detrás,
Cerca y Lejos
Y algo más.
Abajo, Arriba,
Enfrente, Encima,
Y ahora, muchachos,
Se acaba la rima.

I also taught motions to go with the rhyme, and we all got up and did it together.
Students need to have this memorized for Friday - they'll write it out individually and then perform it in groups of 3's.

1. Preterite Partner Oral Assessment: In 8 rounds of questions, each student alternated between ASKING and ANSWERING a selected group of the questions from the study sheets. Those who ASKED the questions also scored their partner's responses, according to the guidelines of (1)appropriateness of the information (2)accuracy of the verb (3)promptness of the delivery.
THE STUDENTS DID GREAT! and I AM A VERY PROUD TEACHER, Indeed. Gracias, estudiantes.

2. More practice with irregular preterites - we continued on in the pink packet:
A. Spelling changes with -er & -ir verbs (also see the bottom of the front page of your white reference packet, EL PRETERITO).
B. SER, IR, DAR, VER - more practice with these.
C. We completed "Practices B & C" in the packet.

3. More practice with Direct Object Pronouns - We continued on in that packet, too. Especially focused on when "YOU" is the SUBJECT of the VERB versus the DIRECT OBJECT of the VERB.

4. I gave out PROGRESS REPORTS.

Vocabulary and Speaking Practice:
Activities 4 & 5, page 134.
In Activity 4 students wrote out the 8 places in the town pictured in the drawings, and what they "had to do" there.
Then in Act. 5, they acted out the conversation asking and answering questions about where they had to go, what they had to do there and when the places opened and closed.

Irregular Preterite Review:
1. Corrections of the Irregular Preterite Verb Grid
2. Conjugation practice games: Verb Subjects Ball toss - the catcher identifies the subject their thumb landed on and then conjugates the previously indicated verb for that form.
3. Period 2 also corrected last night's Practice A exercise from the Irregular Preterite packet.

Preterite Oral Exam Practice:
More practice for our oral tomorrow - today we did more rotating partners. With each new partner students traded off roles of "Interviewer" and "Interviewee". We also focused on a different set of the questions with each new partner. This is a similar format to what we will do tomorrow.

Direct Object Pronouns
Period 4 got the presentation and packet practice that Period 2 did yesterday.

Practice for your oral tomorrow!
Remember for the best score, you'll want to be able to:
1. Answer with appropriate INFORMATION

1. Warm-up sentences translating the 4 irregular preterite verbs studied as homework: Estar, Tener, Hacer and Poder.

2. Homework Correction: Activity 19, page 142 (irregular preterite verbs))

3. New packet: Irregular Preterite Verbs (rosado). We went over the "grouped irregulars" (U stems, I stems, and J stems)and compared these with the irregulars on the backside of the first page of our WHITE reference packet, EL PRETERITO. Then we went over the NUMBERED STUDY POINTS in the Irregular Preterite packet.

4. We reviewed the IRREGULAR PRETERITE VERB GRID we began last week, and the verbs we added in last night: TENER, ESTAR, PODER & HACER.

5. PRETERITE ORAL EXAM PRACTICE: Preparing for FRIDAY, we wrote out answers to questions #11-23 (2B Preterite Partner Questions - pink questions handout). Later, we reviewed our answers and then practiced asking and answering these with our "seat partner".

Subjunctive Review:
1. Flash card sentences - rotating groups of 5 cards each, up to 20 sentences in all, each one wrote out his/her own version while working with a partner. We went over all of them together once most were done.

2. Corrections of last night's homework (Ex. B) in the subjunctive packet.

3. Proyectos:
A. Reina finished telling us about the Tango, completing her presentation on the history of Latin Dance.
B. Enrique D. presented "La geografia de Sudamérica"

C. Héctor was absent, so we'll look for his presentation on La música mexicana upon his return, and we ran long, so Pablo will present tomorrow on Las Islas Galápagos.

D. Also "on deck" for tomorrow is Ricardito with his topic, "El Salvador".

Tuesday Late-start Schedule

1. Warm-up: Students wrote out answers to the first 10 questions on the 2B Partner Questions Handout (we'll be using these for our ORAL TEST on Friday) while I collected and graded their "fan folds" vocabulary practice homework.

2. We reviewed the questions and their possible answers - Students need to be sure they are answering with BOTH the INFORMATION as well as the CORRECT FORM OF THE PRETERITE VERBS.

3. New vocabulary in context: We watched the DVD of the Video Historia. See pages 132-133 in the textbook for the script and photos taken from the video.

4. Working with a partner, students wrote out answers to the comprehension questions about the Video Historia: Actividad 3, page 133. Once done, we reviewed the answers together as a whole class.

5. Gram Activa - DVD presentation of the irregular preterite verbs featured in this lesson: Ser, Ir, and Hacer, Tener, Estar, and Poder - see pages 140 and 142.

6. Textbook page 142 AND White Irregular Verb Grid (begun in lesson 2B) AND White EL PRETERITO packet. We continued our work over the "grouped irregulars", continuing filling in the verb grid for the "UV", "U", "i", and "J" groups.

Homework:
1. Study the 4 verbs on page 142 (Hacer, Tener, Estar, and Poder. For tomorrow, KNOW their Forms and Meanings in the Preterite. Example I give you "She was sick" and you'll write "Ella estuvo enferma".
2. Activity 19, page 142: Write out the forms of the verbs needed to fill the spaces in the paragraph.

Tuesday - Late Start Schedule

1. Stamped and corrected the vocabulary crossword completed as last night's homework - based on the vocabulary on page 60.

2. Students turned in signed permission letters for the 2 films we will be viewing in our next unit.

3. Review of the basics of the subjunctive - I wrote notes on the Smart Board, several students also took their own notes.
What it is; How it is formed; When to use

4. I distributed a new SUBJUNCTIVE packet, going over the same items as above, but in greater detail and a quick overview of the past subjunctive (el imperfecto de subjuntivo).
We worked through the notes and examples on the first few pages, and worked EXERCISE A together.

5. "Reina" presented today on La historia de los bailes latinos, but ran a bit short of time and will finish her last segment tomorrow.

Tarea:
Subjunctive Packet = Exercise B = Item numbers: 1,2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15.

2B Tests Review = Most people have made-up these tests so we could now go over them. We went over the students work and the answers to:

B. 2B Lesson Recognition Test and some production (5/04)
C. 2B Vocabulary Production Test (5/05)

Period 4 practiced the preterite questions/answers for the oral test on Friday - (Period 2 lost an additional 20 minutes due to assembly running long).

Tarea:
Practice All of the vocabulary on page 152.
Select the 8 that are most difficult for you to remember.
Make a "fan fold" of these 8 words (writing each of them out 8 times).

Short class today re: Prom Court Assembly

1. We organized the printed/written materials for our projects and then turned them in.

2. Activity 2-25 - page 62. Students wrote out definitions for the items listed in the activity, without mentioning what the item is. Then they circulated asking others to guess what they were describing and guessing what others had described. Great practice for vocabulary, circumlocution, and listening comprehension.

3. I began introducing the basics of the subjunctive: What it is, how it is formed and,in general terms, when it is used. Get notes from a classmate.

Tarea:
1. Have your parent/guardian sign you permission letter for the movies in the human rights unit.
2. Practice your vocabulary with the crossword puzzle distributed today in class.

4. En casa/El hogar Packet - We reviewed the vocabulary on the front and back of the first page, and completed the first exercise.

5. Period 2: Partner Preterite Questions Oral practice.
(Period 4 had 12 people out for Sports and Absences = we'll practice every day next week)

6. Both periods got to watch a little more of the movie, "Babé" en español.

Tarea:

We finished watching the movie ANTZ, en español.
We watched a Travelogue DVD I purchased in Mexico about the major regions in Mexico.

Tarea:
All printed material for research projects is due on Monday:
1. ONE copy of your our specialized vocabulary list AND comprehension questions with the answers.
2. Proof of your PROCESSING AND INTERNALIZING the information researched = NOT highlighted photocopies. But rather: Detailed project outline and/or graphic organizer, or Research notes with personalized comments.
3. New bibliography of sources USED for this project.
4. Printed out copies of your sourses.
5. Your Power Point Slides as a HANDOUT/3 SLIDES PER PAGE = Black and White is FINE - don't waste your color ink on this.

1. Turned in last night's homework, Activity 3, page 127: answering personal questions practicing using time expressions indicating AT WHAT TIME things occur.

2. LAST CALL - answers to the questions on the bottom of the 3A: A ver si recuerdas vocabulary sheet that was due on Tuesday.

3. "Quiz" - ?Qué hora es?: Using a handout with 16 clock faces, students wrote down the answer to the question, ?Qué hora es? based on the time indicated on the clocks. We debriefed afterwards.

4. Furnishings Vocabulary Builders - 2-sided yellow picture handout (32 items in all). We reviewed their names and pronunciations, and then we played the game, "?Qué falta?" - what's missing. I placed 8 items at a time under the document camera, covered the lens, and removed one - the students had to identify the missing item.

5. Big vocabulary packet about the home: En casa/el hogar. We looked at the detailed drawing of the kitchen, and I demonstrated the format of the work - we'll start the exercises tomorrow. I also showed all of the rooms included as well as THE 3 PAGES FILLED WITH DETAILED VOCABULARY at the end of the packet. This will be very USEFUL FOR TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK.

Tarea:
1. Draw/Create a DETAILED visual of your "CASA IDEAL". Include both inside and outside and LABEL your ROOMS and FURNISHINGS. Be ready to talk about this in Spanish in small groups.
2. White vocabulary packet: 3A Vocabulary - complete with 2 Quiz Site Games. START LEARNING IT TONIGHT.

5. Lotería - La Naturaleza: We played this vocabulary bingo game using terms from Nature.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo

1. Student's turned in last night's homework - vocabulary sheet based on the "mini-lesson" prior to 3A - pages 126 & 127 = The rooms of the house and household chores. AS well as questions to be answered in Spanish at the bottom of the second page.

2. Quick study refresher before taking the 2B Vocabulary/Spelling Test (Really part of the Lesson 2A test, but yesterday we decided to divide the test into 2 parts).

2. While eating, we watched part of Linda Ronstadt's concert, Canciones de mi padre - her tribute to the traditional music, songs and dance of Mexico.

3. We corrected the homework - finishing up the Workbook Packet for Lesson 2A.

4. Review packet over the vocabulary and structures from the lesson - in preparation for tomorrow's test.

5. Partner Oral Game - guessing what each other had written as their predictions of the future.

Spanish II 05-01-09

I was out of class today, attending a conference in southern Oregon. Here's the work I left with the substitute for you to do in class:

1. Distribute “Warm-up” translation sentences- practicing vocabulary and the preterite.

2. Stamp completed homework: Yellow packet – page 46, Exercise 2B-7.

3. Show the ANSWER KEY to the warm-up and let students correct their work.

4. Show the ANSWERS to HOMEWORK, and have students correct this, too.

5. Remind students they have the 2B Lesson Test on MONDAY (they got study guides yesterday and let them know I sent it to my blog, too). They can refer to this previous post Spanish II Study Guide for 2B Lesson Test.

6. Distribute the 2B Vocabulary Crossword – have students work on this in pairs. They MAY consult their pink vocabulary sheets and/or page 124 in their text books, but remind them to note the words they don’t know – they should study these over the weekend.
Once most are done, show the answers under the document camera.

7. Play MOVIE – Babe (Babé)= In Spanish with English subtitles. The students are to WATCH and LISTEN to the movie while READING the subtitles.

I was out of the class today, attending a conference in southern Oregon. Here is an overview of the work I planned for you to do with your substitute:


1. Stamped completed homework:

(a) Exercises E & F in the Future and Conditional packet.
(b) Completed Fortune Teller game = 8 fortunes with at least 3 verbs in the future for each fortune.


2. Gave students correct their homework, using the answer key under the document camera.

3. Practiced the future via the Fortune Telling Game: Students play this with at 3 different partners, each time taking turns both to tell and hear their fortunes:
A: Select a color and then SPELL out the color in Spanish, opening and closing the game with each letter.
B. Select a number and then Count out the Number by 100’s
C. Select a number, and then the partner reads the other’s “fortune” to him/her.

4. Played the Movie “Antz” - in Spanish with English subtitles.

5. Distributed the homework:
