  • New HANDOUT of partner interview questions "Entrevista acerca de la niñez": Reviewed meanings and possible answers for all of the questions. We'll be using these, along with other questions, for your ORAL FINAL EXAM.

1. Reviewed the time expressions that introduce the use of the imperfecto (quiz on them tomorrow).
2. Study Notes - packet "The Imperfect Tense" & practices A & B.
3. Corrected the verb grid - last night's homework.
4. Partner drills - asking/answering questions using the verbs:
EX. Tú form? - Yo answer; Uds. form? - Nosotros answer
5. Blue Handout: Communicative Activity 4A-1 Asking your partner about his/her childhood.

1. Read "El español en el trabajo" aloud with a partner - re: the first bilingual counselor in the US, and then we compared this to the counselors in our school. We have 3 Spanish-English bilingual counselors/community liaisons.

El subjuntivo:
2. Cuadrícula: made a verb grid of all of the examples of the various forms of the subjunctive using the examples on pages 132, 135 and 137 = Great study tool for tomorrow's test (too subtle?)
3. Partner practice: Verb drills & Activities 38 & 39 = practicing stem-changers in the subjunctive.
4. Homework review: Activities 33 & 34

El proyecto - los artículos sobre la salud:
1. We organized and stapled our packets: Cover page (grading sheet); typed summary; 5 discussion questions; article with web address.
2. Got into groups of 4 - for recorded orals. Each group got a recorder and filled-in a sheet with the members of the group and a check-off column indicating if s/he has presented, the number of their recorder, the name of their file on the recorder. This paper was returned with the group's recorder at the end of the session. Every group finished at least one presenter - some groups did two.

Tarea:
1. Handout: Translation practice sentences that require the subjunctive.
2. STUDY for subjunctive conjugation test tomorrow.

Intro - the "NEW" past tense - "El imperfecto". Using photos from my life I shared some stories about where I used to live, what I was like at that time and what I used to do. As students listened, they filled in a comprehension/ information chart. During our debriefing, students noticed they had observed all of the major forms of the "Imperfecto".

4A - Lesson Into - we went over the goals on page 185, and then read/listened the lesson opener on pages 186-187, and then practiced pronouncing the new words. We also did the comprehension activities using the new vocabulary in context; Activities 1 & 2, page 187.
Handout: NEW vocabulary lists = Lessons 4A & 4B together.

Preterite Review:
  • Sang the "Cucaracha" Irregular preterites song.
  • Reviewed what will be on tomorrow's Preterite Conjugation Test (see Friday's post)
  • Corrected the homework - Packet: Irregular Preterite Tense - pp. 52 & 54

3. Practice and then be ready to present your article to a small group.
4. Write 5 comprehension questions in Spanish for your group to answer.
Note: TYPE all written work for your project and staple your article to the back of your written work to turn it all in together.

  • Activites 3 = JUEGO: 2 cosas verdaderas y 1 mentira. Using the preterite to write and then share about a party in the past. Which thing is NOT the truth? Your partners had to guess.
  • Homework review: WB 71 & 72
  • Finished the yellow handout from yesterday (re:pp 182-183) - practicing the diminutive (-ito) and the absolute superlative (ísimo).
2. El pretérito: Continued our review of this complicated past tense. - TEST on TUESDAY!
  • SONG: "La cucaracha" - with all of the irregulars grouped by verse.
  • Reviewed our WHITE 3-page reference handout, highlighting the verb to be included on TUESDAY'S TEST (See below)

WAVA - Listening Activity 6: Moises had lots of errands and Felipe can't catch up with him. Who saw him where? At what time was he seen? In what order did he do his errands?

Partner Direct Object Substitution Game/Review (Yellow class cards). One partner says, "Invito a Paco a la fiesta" and the other partner says, "Lo invito", etc.

Juegos:
1. Two tongue twisters with food themes:
a. PEPE PECAS PICA PAPAS CON UN PICO, CON UN PICO PICA PAPAS PEPE PECAS.
b. COMO POCO COCO, POCO COCO COMPRO, Y COMO POCO COCO COMO, COMPRO POCO COCO.

2. (Period 4) - Using the food guide picture pages, partners tried to see how many fruits they could name with just one seed (una pepita/un hueso) and how many with lots of seeds (muchas pepitas).

Period 3 watched just a few more minutes of their movie.

Tarea:

I reinforced what I am looking for in the Progress Report Goals - Reminding students they always have two class meetings to have work signed by parents. Goals and Signatures due on Monday. See yesterday's blog for details. Note: Blogger wouldn't let me post yesterday, and I see it didn't post what I sent on Wednesday. If you're reading this, I got it fixed (:>)

Direct Objects and their Pronouns:
Big review of what we did yesterday and more, too. BLUE packet: Personal A and Direct Object Pronouns Lo, La, Los and Las. We took notes & used highlighters to emphasize the key points. Next we practiced by working through the packet together.

Unit 2 Vocabulary and Lesson Test Review: We carefully went over the these tests - looking for why the answers were what they were AND to double check the corrections for accuracy. I also talked about the importance of DAILY study/review/practice to master skills. It is obvious that many DO this but also that several people do NOT - your Vocabulary test scores are good indicators; two weeks should be plenty of time to learn 40 words.

Irregulary Preterite Practice:
1. Partner question/answer drills - focusing on questions with tú being answered with yo.
2. I asked questions to the whole class and they answered back as a whole.
3. Subject pronoun ball toss conjugation game.

Tarea:
1. Bring your homework due today to get credit & review on Monday.
2. Progress Report w/Goal, Action Plan & Signature

Vocabulary practice in context:
Activity 4, page 134 (writing) and then Activity 5 - talking with a partner about what we had written. Next, we reviewed the conversations as a whole class.

Direct Objects and their Pronouns:

First I demonstrated how these work by using props in the classroom while speaking Spanish. Students quickly picked up the pattern and then we practiced more together. Next we watched the Gram Activa DVD and did their "practice quiz". See the "Gramática" box on text page 138.

Irregular Preterit Verbs:

We also watched this "Gram Activa" and did this practice quiz, too. We then corrected our homework: Verb grid and Lotería game sheet. Next we played the Lotería (Bingo) game practicing conjugation these irregular past-tense verbs. SAVE your game sheet in case we get to play some more.

I distributed Progress Reports and explained about writing a goal BEFORE asking your parent(s) to sign it.
1. Use the percentages for each of the weighted categories for your grade (homework, in-class performance and tests). Decide what percentage you want by the end of the quarter and how you'll achieve it. Describe your ACTION PLAN - needs to be observable: What, When (time & how often), Where and with Whom you will do.

Tarea:
1. Progress Report: Goal, Action Plan and Parent(s) Signature by Monday.
2. Finish your Irregular Preterite Verb Grid = the "J" group: Traer, Decir, Traducir (to translate), Conducir (to lead, conduct, drive)

Los mandatos famliliares:
Reviewed formation of tú commands and then we did some drill practice with them. Next we corrected the homework exercises from the workbook that also practiced them: WB39 & 40: Affirmative and negative tú commands.

Los mandatos formales:
New white packet - Formal Commands: We reviewed the study points (numbered items) and went over Practices A, B, and C - doing a couple of items together.

Yellow Packet - Los Mandatos - My overview of ALL of the command forms - with study notes and tips.

I handed out Progress Reports:
Write a goal about your achievement in Spanish class using the data (percentages) in the three weighted categories I use to calculate your grade: Homework; In-class Performance; Tests. Indicate what you would like your percentage to be by the end of the quarter and include your ACTION PLAN -What, How, When and with Whom - you will do to achieve your goal.
Have your parent(s) sign above your goal and turn -in by Monday (5/16).

Película:
Period 3 watched some more of their movie, "Enredados"

Tarea:

ENCUESTA (Survey) - Warm-up: Answered the survey questions about food for ourselves. Then we interview up to four other people about their food preferences and their family's traditions.
Last we shared some of our findings with the class.

Review:

1. Rutina diaria/ Food and exercise diaries: We shared some of the foods we had eaten yesterday and I answered some vocabulary questions for those we didn't know how to say in Spanish. Some we looked up on an on-line dictionary - www.wordreference.com and I showed how to use the site and its forum.
2. Workbook 38 - Practicing vocabulary and reading comprehension.
3. Informal Commands - Pink packet - Exercises A, B, C. Reviewed Affirmative and Negative "Tú" Commands.

NEW:
Formal Commands (Ud. & Uds.) - White Packet & page 123 in text. These use the same "formula" as the negative Tú commands. We took some notes and did some practicing.

Period 3 watched a few more minutes of "Enredados"

Tarea:
1. Write-up your findings from today's survey in the lower section of the handout. Be sure to include 2 to 3 plural subjects and include the names of people you are talking about.
2. Workbook pages 39 & 40 - Practicing Affirmative and Negative INFORMAL (tú) commands.

El pretérito: Continued on with our study of the simple past tense -
(1) White reference packet "El preterito"
(2) Text pages 140 & 142 = Irregular verbs in the preterite
(3) Lotería: Irregulares del pretérito - we began to use this as a reference, and will play it later.
(4) White verb grid - we filled in the infinitives of the first two groups of irregulars on the second page of the reference handout: Ser,Ir, Dar, Ver, Tener, Andar, Estar.

Tarea:
1. Complete the irregular verb grid by filling in all of the conjugations for the 7 verbs listed above.
2. Workbook page 49 (chores from page 126 in the book) & Wkbk 51 - vocabulary 3A (pg. 150)

Warm-up: Activity 5 - page 117: Reading and then listening comprehension.

Las comidas - using the food chart handouts we reviewed the different foods in Spanish for each of the categories. Students shared with one another about their food choices yesterday (tarea).
BE SURE you are practicing the food vocabulary and will be able to give LOTS of examples in Spanish from all of the food groups.

Corrected Act. 12 - and then REVIEWED Affirmative Tú commands. We ADDED NEGATIVE Tú commands - see page 122 AND the PINK PACKET (Informal Commands), and worked more in the packet.

2. Vocabulary Review - Compare 3A list to Page 150 - Sections: Los síntomas, partes del cuerpo, actividades and la nutrición. Be sure you have ALL of those items -
From page 150 we added: La síntoma, la medicina, el corazón, el músculo, el oído, el hábito alimenticio - "eating habits". I added in "el pulmón/los pulmones" - lung/lungs.

3. Re-introduced "mandatos affirmativos con" - Informal Direct Commands = page 121 & Pink Packet. Activities in the book & packet + Act. 11, page 121

1. Filled-in the vocabulary from the "Quehaceres" 2A-A ver si recuerdas pink handout from last week while I checked-in homework. Next we practiced the words. Next we reviewed our BLUE "2A- A ver si recuerdas Apuntes" handout - going over lots of special meanings and uses.

2. Filled-in the Muebles - picture flashcards and then played "Qué falta?" - identifying the flashcard missing from the set.

3. Partner Orals:
(A) Mi casa de sueños: Asked and answered questions about what your house looks like and where it's located.
(B) We continued on with three more rounds of the 2B/Preterite questions - doing partner scoring as we did last week.

Tarea:
White to-sided handout "Los quehaceres" and "Qué hora es?"
Side 1: Fill-in the exercise about chores, and then practice the "comunicativo"
Side 2: Indicate (in Spanish) what time each of the clock faces say - Remember the "short hand" indicates the hour.

Telling Time - We spent lots of time today reviewing this:
Students brainstormed about important things to remember about how to tell time and say when something is happening. We compared our notes before checking in the book on page 127 and then doing LOTS of PRACTICING.

Notes about the THREE different words for "TIME":
La hora (clock time); El tiempo (general 'time'); La vez/las veces - multiple times/occurances

Packet - "Clock Time": Lots of good notes and hints about telling time - we worked through this, taking notes and just doing a few examples from each exercise.

2B Partner Oral Exam:
We set-up the class room for rotating oral partners.
I taught the students how to score each other.
We had two rounds of orals - everyone had a chance to BOTH score someone and to be scored.
We'll do more of this on Monday.

Tarea:
1. FINAL copy of "Mi casa de sueños" project - be ready to share about your house and ask about other people's. REMEMBER: FIVE (5) Rooms - Each has at least FOUR (4) Furnishings. All ACCURATELY and neatly Labeled and colored-in. Demonstrate your pride in your work. The five rooms (minimum) = Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, Bedroom, Bathroom. USE your RESOURCES! The house packet, the blue handout - house and furnishings, Lotería: la casa y muebles.
2. Lotería - la casa y los muebles: BILINGUAL ANSWERS - Select words from each of the five columns above to fill-in the column below AND then also write the word's meaning in English.
3. Keep practicing your 2B questions - we're doing more Oral exam on Monday!

1. Warm-up - Conjuguemos.com Quiz #1 - Both Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns used together.
Debriefed and took notes while correcting.

2. Partner pronouns substitution drills (Direct Objects/yellow cards).

3. Period 4 highlighted the key expressions on the explanation page of the packet indicating HOW to TELL the DIFFERENCE between Direct Object and Indirect Objects (Period 3 did this yesterday).

1. Partner practice on the 2B questions we will be using for our oral exam tomorrow, while I checked in homework. After that we practiced some of the trickier ones all together.

2. We completed a survey for Caleb for his business class.

3. Went over the MINIMUM criteria for our "Casa de sueño" - the 5 rooms listed on the project sheet (kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom & bathroom) and EACH room should include a MINIMUM of 4 furnishings. See your Blue Extra vocabulary sheet AND your THE HOUSE packet. Also, today we received a two-sided handout of furnishing drawings.

4. Vocabulary In-put story, "ésta no es mi casa" by Anne Mueller. It is rather like "this is the house that Jack built" but each house is different and the story explains all about the house and how it is NOT the author's house. At the end the author shares a picture of her house.

5. We took an inventory/questionnaire about houses and answered it about our real house/apartment.

6. Next we DREW a picture of our home and wrote a paragraph about it, using the types of descriptions talked about in the story.

7. Working with a partner, we told one another about our homes.
