  • Continued with the project presentations – we saw some wonderful Power Points and heard about very interesting national parks to go visit.

STUDY! We’re REALLY going to have the 1-B test tomorrow: Same criteria as I outlined last week with the addition of vocabulary comprehension and production: I’ll provide definitions of 15 of the vocabulary items on page 58 and you’ll write the item in Spanish. Then YOU’LL write 4 definitions in Spanish and also write out which item you’re talking about.

They are: (1) El presente indicativo, (2) el presente subjuntivo, (3) los mandatos (imperatives), (4) el pretérito, (5) el imperfecto indicativo, (6) el futuro, (7) el condicional (potencial), (8) el progresivo presente (estar + participio presente/gerundio)

Spanish III & Spanish IV 03-19-07

  • Both classes started off with editing circles for their different past tense projects due tomorrow. Spanish IV – your Shadow story about a childhood event; Spanish III your Power Point presentation about a trip to a national park in a Spanish-speaking country.
  • The editing circles took the bulk of the class in all sections. See the Círculos redactors on the previous blog entry to this one, to see the categories and the guiding questions if you want to check your own work. Spanish III got daily points for having completed and brought their outlines (were to have been done in-class last Wednesday) and rough drafts. I circulated and answered questions.
  • Periods 1 & 2: got grade printouts, if your parents didn’t come to conferences. Please have them signed and return tomorrow. Period 4 – I didn’t get them to you, so we’ll do this tomorrow for the following day.
  • Spanish IV – we reviewed the test over the past tenses from last Wednesday.

  1. Warm-up: Distribute the “Código EcoViajero

Students read it aloud with their seat partner and figured out it's meaning. Then we
went over it as a whole class.

  1. I am postponing the Chapter 1-B test until next week. Probably Wednesday, maybe Thursday. This way you can still be working on your understanding of the preterite and imperfect as we share our projects.
  1. Distributed the sign-up sheet for the projects and each student selected a country and a park – if they found a different one than is listed, that is just fine, but they needed to write it in under the country in which it is located.
  1. GTime to work on their projects.
    1. Write an outline based on the required elements of the project – YES(!) this WILL be included in the preparation points. You should not simply copy my Spanish – but rather, write in the specific details that pertain to your site.

Remember: A list of the required elements can be found both in the green project
handout & the white page that also include the Annotated Bibliography and the Scoring guide.

Note: we’ll NOT be doing an Annotated bibliography this time, but everything else IS included.

b. Worked on your personal narrative about your trip. Remember to apply the rules for the preterite and the imperfect. – handouts, on use of these were made available.

b. Preterit vs. Imperfect – used exercises 10 & 11 as a warm-up to the quiz .

  1. Preterite/Imperfect quiz. - Students took and turned in as completed.

  1. Work time on their “Shadow Story” projects. Create a narrative in the past; presumably a childhood experience (real or imaginary). You eed to set the scene and establish the principle characters then launch into the event itself. You will be telling this to us aloud, and all the while building your visual by incorporating cut outs you will place on the overhead to create shadows.

Homework: Rough draft of their 350-500 word narrative.

  • Partner sharing and editing of our 10 sentences about things others were doing when someone else suddenly interrupted them.
  • We took turns writing example of these sentences on the Smart Board, and double-checked them for meaning and accuracy of use of the imperfect and the preterite.
  • Big over view of the National Park in a Spanish-speaking country project:

1. Helpful websites, and a BIG list of countries and possible project locations.

2. English list of required components in the written part of the project.

3. Overview of all of the elements required: Written, Power Point, Specialized vocabulary list for the class, Comprehension questions for the class, Bibliography with 5 citations – 3 of which are in Spanish.

  • Told our “stories” about our worst date ever to a partner.
  • Corrected exercise 1-34, page 33: Selecting the correct use of the preterite or the imperfect- review of page 32.
  • Corrected the yellow vocabulary translation exercise from Friday’s substitute day.
  • Introduced the “Cuento de sombras” project:
    1. Write a 350-500 word narrative about a childhood event (real or imaginary).
    2. Practice telling it aloud and using shadow figures to “build” the story on the overhead projector while it telling to us.
    3. Rough draft due on Monday – ready for editing circles.
    4. Be ready to present with your final copy (typed, double spaced) with “shadows” on Tuesday.

  • We reviewed our answers to the questions about the reading on literary genres, and further discussed their forms and differences.
  • Corrections on the homework: Act. 25- vocabulary practice; Act. 29 – past tense practice.
  • La lista máxima de los verbos: We did a “Jig Saw” activity with this handout of four columns of infinitives. (1) We divided into four teams – each one per column of verbs – and we wrote definitions for all of them. (2) We reconfigured into new teams so that a member from each of the previous teams came together to share their definitions with the others.
  • Tarea:
    1. Know the list of verbs Aborrecer through Exponer
    2. Conjugate the following verbs on the chart on the reverse of the verbs list:

Aborrecer, Atraer, Caber, Contener, Disponer: Use “yo” in all of the forms except the Tu commands.

  • Small white board review game in groups of 4: two teams of two. We did more practice with sentence writing, combining the preterite and imperfect with the vocabulary as yesterday, but today one team provided the sentence for the other team to translate.

  • Homework review/correction. Activities 39 & 41. Activity 39 – we shared our sentences about our childhood. Act. 41 – we corrected the forms of the verbs we wrote out for the account of Jennifer Rodríguez (Olympic speed skater).

  • Introduced the research project about national parks and ecotourism in Spanish-speaking countries. Received a project expectation sheet and a list of website from with to begin their research.

  • Homework:

    1. Write out the answers to the questions in part 2 of Activity 41.
    2. Complete the WAVA exercise 10, page 16: Write out the vocabulary word that is being described, and then find it in the word search.

sentences while you still remember what they mean.

      1. Go over any in-class corrections and write notes to yourself about what you want to remember about how to do it correctly in the future.
