Spanish III 03-12-07

  • Took notes over the verbs that when translated into English seem to “change their meanings” from the imperfect to the preterite. The verbs covered were:

Imperfect: Preterite:

Saber knew (information) found out, first learned of

Conocer knew (people, places) first met someone, first went to a place

Poder had to ability (at last) managed to do/negative – failed to do

Tener possessed, had (owned) “got”/received; owned briefly

Estar was (condition) “got”/became a condition

Entender understood caught on

Costar was valued at (didn’t buy) it cost + it was the price paid (did buy)

Preferir preferred decided to do

Querer wanted; loved wanted/loved BUT got over it; neg = refused to do

Haber (hay) there was/there were there occurred

  • Power Point presentation reviewing the uses of the Preterite and the Imperfect.

  • Used Barbara Kuzen Nelson’s interactive web page over the Feria de San Fermín to practice the preterite and the imperfect. We did two of the exercises as a whole class.

  • Explained about the intended homework from Friday, and reassigned it for Tuesday. Using the four columns write 10 sentences about how one person/or group is interrupted in the middle of doing something by another action in the past.
