Period 2: Practiced following directions using the WAVA - Activity 5. Period 4 had a fire drill!

1.¡Los fantasmas! We practiced expressing relative locations (prepositions of place) by describing a drawing of a haunted house identifying where all 20 ghosts are hiding.

2. We practiced our poema de preposiciones/adverbios with gestures and a bit of choreography.

3. El chigarí - I read this children's story in Spanish, while sharing the illustrations under the document camera - fun example of the present progressive - see page 171.

4. MANDATOS - Getting ready to give and follow directions around the town, we're practicing formal and informal commands. We continued with the packet we started yesterday: correcting the homework on FORMAL COMMANDS, taking notes on INFORMAL COMMANDS and working together on the exercises - just about finishing it - one small section to go!

5. Period 2 wrote out helpful suggestions for signs in the halls - using the formal commands.

Continued with our new chapter - moving into the main part today, after reviewing the homework from the weekend - the yellow handout over pages 155-156.

Vocabulary practice: Reviewed the green handout and I verified the extra words, listened to pages 158-159 & did the listening comprehension activities (Act. 2 = great practice at following directions - the main concept in this chapter's theme.)

Gramática -
(1) Notes about the Present Progressive - see the notes on the back side of your green vocabulary packet.
(2) NEW blue packet: Commands - we worked through the notes on the first part of this packet - Formal Commands (Ud./Uds.) and will be finishing up this part as homework.
(3) Watched the Gram Activa about Irregular Tu commands

1. The 2-column handout to categorize the lists of foods into Bebidas/Comidas and then into Buena/Mala para la salud.

2. We did a 10 word dictation, using items from our vocabulary - matching the sounds with their spelling in Spanish, and then confirming their meanings.

3. Reviewed the plurals of nouns and adjectives - took APUNTES (notes) charting masculine/feminine forms of adjectives and their singular and plural forms, too. Again, we focused on new ones that are part of our new lesson. Next we corrected our WORKBOOK homework, practicing these same ideas. We're extending Activity 13, text page 157 until Monday with the hope more people will complete it so we can use it for Part II of the activity.

4. We reviewed SER and ESTAR - New Handout and Notes - and we completed the practice sentences on that page, too.

5. We watched the next segment on our South America DVD - visiting Buenos Aires today. ¡Qué ciudad más bonita!

6. I handed out detailed Progress Reports - with the averages in each of the three categories used to calculate your overall grade: Homework, In-class Performance and Tests/Quizzes. Please have your folks sign the second page and return that one to me on Monday or Tuesday.

I. We started our NEW LESSON - Capítulo 3B.
(a) We talked about the photos and painting of markets and the goals of the lesson on pages 146-147.
(b) Practiced our new vocabulary in context listening and reading pages 148-149, doing the active listening exercises on page 149.
(c) Read the Video Historia, while listening to it, on pages 150-151. We'll watch this tomorrow.
(d) Practiced pronunciation of the new vocabulary using large flashcards.
(e) We traded our homework fill-in vocabulary lists with a partner and our partners checked our spelling against the list on page 168 - just underlining where we misspelled something.
(f)I also distributed a NEW VOCABULARY and Lesson Review HANDOUT - include a Quia vocabulary on-line games site.

II. Geografía:
(a) Working with a new partner, students brainstormed all of the Spanish-speaking countries they could think of. Then they worked with another pair and the four of them added to their lists. Last we worked together to complete the countries per regions of the world. Many students were surprised to learn there is a Spanish-speaking country in Africa.
(b) New packet - Lyrics to the Capital Raps Songs - Countries and capital cities of the Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas. We sang along to the rap about Mexico, Central America and the Carribean - and some sort of danced in their seats!
(c) We started our movie about South America - visiting Chile.

1. Warm-up: Food vocabulary practice - HANDOUT: ¿Qué quieres en el desayuno, en la merienda (snack) y en el almuerzo? We followed-up with speaking practice based on our selections AND we completed WAVA writing exercise 10.

2. Práctica de verbos (HANDOUT) - Two-sided handout selecting the correct infinitive for the context of the sentence and conjugation forms.

3. Partner Oral - asking/answering questions about who prefers which foods.

4. Repaso del vocabulario - We reviewed the vocabulary using flashcards under the document camera. Students were to write down the 15 hardest ones for them on their handout in #2.

5. Crucigrama de comidas (HANDOUT - verde): short crossword puzzle of food items - using a word bank and clues.

6. We played the Lotería of -IR verbs, prepped as homework for last Friday.

we reviewed the STUDY NOTES and took more notes, too. We also did more of the exercises - practicing more -er & -ir verbs. (bottom of page 5 and page 7 #s 9-16.
(B) We played our LOTERIA -ER verbs game: practicing BOTH the different forms of the verbs (conjugations) AND their meanings.
(C) Lotería - ir verbs. I distributed this new game, and we went over the meanings of these -ir verbs. You'll prep this tonight as part of your homework.

2. NEW PARTNERS - los animales: We organized new partner appointments. If you were absent, we made a handout for you - See Maestra.

3. Working with your "La vaca" - Verified the foods in Handout #2 (above)

4. Quick Review of "Gustar" - 4 points to remember:
(A) What is liked = the form of Gustar
Ex. Me gusta la leche (singular item = use gusta)
(B) Me gustan los espaguetis (plural item - use gustan)
(C) When talking about things we use the definite article (el, la, los, las)
(D) Me gusta = I like it - It is pleasing to me
Te gusta = You like it = It is pleasing to you

5. Realidades 3A Partner Oral #1: Asking and Answering questions about food likes/dislikes. We also did this with our "La vaca" partner. Then we debriefed this as a whole class.

6. ¡LOS VERBOS! - We played the Verb Battleship game we set-up on Friday, still working with our same "La vaca" partners.

1. Verb Review: Ser & Estar: Filled-in sentences and added them to our verb grid at the bottom under "Irregular Yo" verbs.

2. We corrected our verb grids - double checking the -IR section done as homework

4. Regular -ar, -er, & ir verb practice - the second half of the Ser/estar handout.

5. Reviewed Tener and Hacer - we learned a couple of forms of these earlier. We used "Tener" in its special expression "Tengo _14_ años = I am 14 years old (literally, I have 14 years).

6. We also added all of the present tense forms of these verbs to our verb grid under the "irregular Yo" verbs.
The forms for TENER are: Tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen
For HACER: Hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen

7. Vocabulary Practice - Activities 4 & 5, text page 128 - Writing and Listening Comprehension based on the picture in the middle of the page.

8. I distributed handouts for Barco de Guerra - a verb conjugation game based on Battleship. We got our ships hidden, and we'll play the game on Monday.

3. Video Historia - pages 132-133: Watched the DVD and then read the pages in the book that correspond to the video.

4. Irregular Preterite - Reviewed the forms of the verbs that were to have been studied as part of last night's homework: Ir / Ser, Tener, estar and andar. We added in the other two verbs from this lesson: Hacer & Poder.

Tarea:
1. Complete the flashcards from yesterday's pink list: same as the one on the link from yesterday's blog. (Card #s 25-48)

VERB DAY!
(1) We watched the Gram Activa DVD - explaining -er & -ir verb forms - See page 132 in your text book.

(2) We wrote out Activity 12, page 132, practicing the -ir verb, compartir, and then students shared their answers by writing them on the board.

(3) Reviewed the WHITE PACKET going over ALL 3 Verb Families: -Ar, -Er, -Ir. We went over the verbs' forms and meanings and TOOK NOTES, too. Get notes from your Study Buddy, if you were absent.

(4) Conjugation Flash Cards: We cut apart -Er & -Ir verb stems and endings flash cards like the -AR set we made with our last chapter, reviewing their meanings, and writing study hints on the reverse of the cards.

(5) We played the conjugation game, using our flash cards and holding up the pieces that go together for each of the clues given.
(6) We came back to the verb grid we began on Tuesday, and completed the upper section on -ER verbs.

Tarea:
1. Workbook page 52 - verb practice: Answering questions in the "Tú" form with the "Yo" form.
2. Finish the -IR section of your white verb grid.
3. Finish up your 3A Flash Cards - Numbers 41-50

1. Big review of VERBS! - (Pink 2-sided handout of fill-in charts)

We went over conjugations AND special translations in English of all of these verbs.
NOTE: In Chapter 3A the book is going to focus on: SER/IR, Hacer, Tener, Estar and Poder.

2. Review of SER/IR - Preterite - see page 140 in text.
Wrote out Activity 15, page 142

3. Watched the Gram Activa - Irregular Preterites & took their practice quiz.

4. The House - Partner Oral game - (Handout) -
Review of FURNISHINGS and PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE.
Students drew a sketch of "their new apartment" and how they furnished it with the items given on the handout. Then they explained where they had put everything as their partner tried to recreate the original drawing. In the end they compared pictures.

5. New Vocabulary - Capítulo 3A - Handout and pronunciation practice.

Tarea:
1. Flashcards for the first 24 items on the new 3A vocabulary list - PLEASE number each item, and write YOUR NAME on card #1.
2. Memorize the PRETERITE forms of SER/IR and the "UV" group (tener, estar, andar) - be ready to show me tomorrow that you KNOW them.

¡DIA CULTURAL! -

We celebrated the Victory of Mexico's Troops over the French on May 5th, 1862 in Puebla with a classic dish from that city: Mole Poblano - with rice and other fun traditional foods and refrescos.

We watched about 30 minutes of a DVD of a concert of Ballet Folklórico with Mariachi and traditional songs and dances of Mexico, and then we switched Jorge, el curioso - and we finally finished it!

Students had an opportunity to play a variety of "Juegos de mesa", and then everyone pitched in and helped clean up. (:>)

(1) 3A Flashcards #2: Numbers 25-40
(2) Workbook pages 51 & 53 - see yesterday's blog for more details.

1. Warm-up: Workbook pages 49-50, Ex. 3A-1 & 2: Practicing our new food vocabulary.

2. More vocabulary practice:
(A) Correcting our vocabulary lists completed as homework - practiced pronunciation.
(B) What's missing (¿Qué falta?): : using the clip art flashcards of our vocabulary - Students reviewed the items, then identified which one I had removed from the set shown under the document camera.

3. LOS VERBOS: We reviewed how -ER verbs are conjugated (how they change forms for different people doing the action) AND added -IR verbs. VERY SIMILAR but DIFFERENT IN NOSOTROS/AS AND VOSOTROS/AS.
(A) Packet of Regular Verbs - cover is an explanation of all 3 "families" of verbs (-ar, -er, -ir), followed by flash cards of their forms.
(B) Verb grid: We filled in the INFINITIVO in Spanish & English (dictionary form) of FIVE -er verbs and FIVE -IR verbs. We did ALL of the forms for APRENDER and ABRIR. We completed the YO (I) and Tú (You) forms for all TEN verbs.

4. We made our PLANS for our 5 de mayo día cultural tomorrow, with several people signing up to either bring something and/or help out with clean-up.

TAREA:
(1) Make the next set of flash cards from your vocabulary list: #s 25-40.
(2) Workbook page 51 (3A-3): Practicing the vocabulary
(3) Workbook page 53 (3A-5): Practicing the -er & -ir verbs. Do BOTH parts: the verb grid AND the sentences below it.

1. Reviewed of the preterite time expressions and introduced the preterite of HACER.

2. Warm-up: Actividad 1, page 126 - Part 1: each student wrote out sentences indicating which family member did what household chore when (in the past).

3. Made NEW partner appointments.

4. With one of our new partners, we did part 2 - Activity 1: Asking/Answer questions about Who did What and When in the past s/he did it.

5. Homework Corrections/Review:
(A) Workbook pages 49-50 (Activities 3A-A & B), re: pages 126 & 127 in text: Reviewing household chores and saying AT what time something happens.
(B) Reviewed the remainder of the vocabulary, pp. 126-127 & the ANSWERS to the QUESTIONS at the bottom of the page.
(C) Telling Time handout
(D) The House packet - From Friday. I was disappointed with how few students completed this assignment. We're adding it back in to be done for tomorrow.

6. We completed the PLANS for our 5 de mayo día cultural tomorrow.

We began our new lesson today: Capítulo 3A - FOOD!

1. Students turned-in their homework:
(A) Classroom diagram (due today)
(B) Repaso #2 & Hay/Estar handout (due Friday)

2. I talked, in Spanish, about my favorite breakfast foods - showing photos and graphics from various food charts, pyramids, and other realia - printed material from Mexico.

3. We listened to various people talking about their favorite foods for breakfast (el desayuno) and lunch (el almuerzo) - see pages 124-125, and then doing the Listening Comprehension Activities 1 & 2 - page 125.

4. Video Historia - we watched the DVD, pp. 126-127, and wrote out our answers to the Listening/Reading Comprehension Activity 3, page 127. After reviewing our answers together, the students turned this in.

5. NEW vocabulary list - 3A: began filling-in items based on what we figured out so far.

6. LOS VERBOS - We reviewed -AR verbs and then added in TWO NEW "FAMILIES" of verbs - Er & Ir verbs. I demonstrated HOW "COMER" conjugates, using a grid under the document camera. I demonstrated what "COMPARTIR" means by sharing some food with various students.

TAREA:
1. Complete the new vocabulary list - see page 144.
2. Make FLASH CARDS for vocabulary list items #s 1-24

I was out of class today,at a conference, but here's an overview of the plans I left with the substitute for you:

1. Explain the Hear/Say conversations and then students work with a partner to complete the conversation.
3. Correct homework – Review for test.
4. 2B Lesson Test – Listening and Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Vocabulary in context.
5. 2B Vocabulary Test = Meanings and Spelling in Spanish.
6. Classroom Diagram Project Handout = homework for Monday – if time allows, they may begin working on this in class.
7. Also, if time permits, finish Curious George in Spanish with English subtitles.

I was at a conference today but here is a summary of the plans I left for you:

1. Homework corrections: Tarea de traducción - Once corrected, students turn-in their homework papers.
2. Play a few more rounds of Lotería Review of the Regular Preterite Tense.
3. TEST 2B – Listening & Reading comprehension; Grammar and Vocabulary in context.
4. As the students hand in their test booklets and answer sheet, they pick up green The House packet. Once all tests are in, Do the listening comprehension - Exercise A all together.
5. Distribute the BLUE handout 3A – A ver si recuerdas, and point out all of the “apuntes” on the reverse.
6. Distribute the handout – Mi casa de sueños Weekend project. If time permits, they may start on it during class.
7. If time permits – Show more Ice Age, in Spanish with English subtitles.
