1. A ver si recuerdas: Capítulo 3:La gramática
(A) Página 109 = Los complimentos directos: We reviewed What they are, How to form them and Where they go in the sentence, and then we wrote out Actividades 3 y 4.
(B) Hoja azul = Two-sided handout with more explanations and practices with direct object pronouns and PLACEMENT of them.
(C) Página 111 - Los complimentos indirectos: Read box on the page and reviewed together - What they are, How to form them and Where they go in the sentence. Next we did Actividad 6.

2. El cuerpo = Página 110: We pronounced these words while indicating where they are on our own bodies. Practiced some more with two songs: Cabeza, hombros, rodilla, pies... and Mi cuerpo (Lonnie Dai Zovi).  I demonstrated the movement/dance steps for the whole song, and then students practiced the first verse.

Tarea: 
1. Workbook page 36 = La comida y los complimentos directos with el progresivo presente.  See pages 108-109 in your textbook.
2. New White packet - do the first two pages (front and back of the first paper in the packet).

(A) We cut out, labeled and organized the cards into like groups: Subject pronouns - Verb stems/roots - Verb endings.
(B) We used the cards to make "mini-sentences" - putting all three elements together.

Español II el 25 de abril de 2012

1. Warm-up sentences - putting together the vocabulary, preterite tense of verbs and preterite time expressions.

2. Answered questions about the "Preterite Verb Grid #2" - since I left that off of the homework from Monday's blog, I extended it to tomorrow.  We did fill-in the Ir & Irse and then added Hacer, as well.  We'll be using these in our next lesson.

3. Played "Lotería" - er & - ir  Regular Preterite Verbs.

4. We practiced writing out the forms of the regular preterite - every student using a personal white board and cues from www.conjuguemos.com - Spanish - Verbs - #8 Regular Preterite - All verbs - All pronouns.
GREAT PRACTICE!  Try more tonight to get ready for tomorrow's quiz.

5. Hora 1era - used their homework sentences to ask/answer questions.
Hora 2nda - Earned their 30 minutes of games in Spanish: I made palomitas de maíz y limonada de Crystal Lite and also played more of Los Increíbles.

1. Listening comprehension: Vocabulary and Grammar in context:
WAVA packet - Actividades 3, 4 & 5.

2. Las prácticas con tablitas blancas - Using individual white boards students wrote out answers to:
A. Quizlets - flash cards = Meaning changers in the preterite
B. BK Nelson's site from Colby College = Completing sentences with the meaning changer verbs. "Help box" explains WHY the answer you choose is correct or not.
C. BK Nelson's site on Ser verus Estar = select which one; also tells why.
D. Adivinanzas - Other students wrote down their "guesses" from the definitions students wrote as homework.

3. Cultura
A. Read about the origins of the dance Salsa, pg. 91 "Fondo cultural"
B. Danced "Salsa cubano", and a couple of other steps, using the Spanish version of Zumba básico.

1. Precaliento:  Wrote-up sentences practicing the preterite.

2. Song: El preguntón = Reviewing the song from Friday - then using the question words (Interrogatives) to help us "build" sentences with rich details.  We completed the activity attached to the song and then I handed out a follow-up activity to write up as homework.

3. We went over the homework: Pink handout "Práctica con el pretérito" & "Qué palabra falta?"

4. We watched some more of "Los increíbles".

ANUNCIO -  Preterite Conjugation test on Thursday.  Here's a link to help you practice.  If the link doesn't work, go to this URL, then select Spanish Verbs, then #8. Regular Preterite. 

Tarea:
1. Practice the preterite!
2. Prepare your Lotería for Regular -Ir & -Er verbs.  Remember to write BOTH the Spanish verb AND what it means in English.  Example: Aprendí / I learned.
3. Use the handout from in-class today and write 10 sentences rich in details
REMEMBER: 
(1) 5 singular subjects & 5 plural subject. 
(2) Each sentence uses a different verb
(3) Each sentence uses at least 5 details (Subject + Verb + 3 pieces of information)
(4) Vary the type of information you use for your sentences.

Muchísimas gracias, estudiantes, por ser tan simpáticos con la Srta. Foltz el viernes pasado.

Lo que hicimos en clase hoy:
1. Actividad 31, pg. 87 = Paso 1: copy and fill-in the form to talk about a favorite song/artist.  Paso 2: Have a conversation with a partner asking/answering questions about your songs.

2. Repaso - WAVA 11, 12, & 13: Using the lesson grammar and vocabulary to describe various performing arts events.

3. Presentaciones: Investigación sobre un/a artista o elemento artístico. Students shared with the class about the artists/artistic pursuits they investigated over the weekend.  We all know lots more about Shakira, who seemed to be the most popular!

4. Los increíbles! - We watched a few minutes more of this in Spanish with Spanish sub-titles.

ANUNCIO:  Lesson 2B Test on Thursday! -
(1) Be able to write the vocabulary word in Spanish from a sentence in Spanish describing it.
(2) Choose between Ser and Estar and its correct conjugation, to best complete the sentence in a story.
(3) Be able to fill-in the preterite or imperfect form of the "Meaning-Changer" verbs on page 90 to have the story make sense.

Tarea:
1. STUDY! 2B Test on Thursday.
2. WAVA 9 - Use the artist you looked up for today to do this paragraph write-up.

I. Warm-up: Green handout “Unidad 4, Lección 3” – 1st side = Imperfecto, 2nd side = Pretérito or Imperfecto

The substitute will stamp your “WAVA – Act. 12” and we’ll go over it on Monday.

II. TEST The students ARE allowed to use the question/vocabulary slips the presenters distributed during their presentation.

III. “Los Increíbles” – shown with BOTH language AND subtitles in Spanish.

I. Listening Comprehension: New “WAVA” packet. Listening Comprehension Activities 5-9.
II. Los interrogatives + How to write “rich sentences” by answering interrogatives

This is a “Sentence –writing Workshop” that I give the kids to build their sentence-writing confidence and skills. By answering the interrogatives, the sentences build themselves.

1. Handout the packet and play the interrogatives song, “El preguntón”.

2. Second page of the packet. Use the first “rich sentence” to find the answers to the questions in the first long sentence, and then they write in the answers. Complete the rest of the questions based on the “rich” sentences.

3. Students create their own “rich” sentences: 2-sided handout.

III. El pretérito

IV. Los Increíbles: Each class has a little more than 15 minutes to finish this movie we started last week.

Video Historia: pages 104-105. Watched the DVD, then read aloud with a partner. Last, wrote up Actividad 3 - comprehension questions.

Qué falta? We played a game practicing vocabulary using picture flashcards.

Introduced "Demonstrative Adjectives" - we watched the Gram Activa, and read page 114 in text. Next we got a blue sheet explaining them with flashcards attached. We also got a blue packet "Demonstrative Adjectives" and we worked through the first page and the top of the second.

El pretérito: We corrected our verb grids, did oral drill practices and took the "Time Expressions for the Preterite" quiz.

1. Finish the 2B flashcards (3s 25-44)

Let's see what you remember about going shopping - Green Handout/reviewing vocabulary about (1) Types of Stores (2) Shopping Actions (3) What to buy (4) Colors and other (5) Descriptions

We practiced the vocabulary, I shared cute little books about the colors and then we did both parts of Actividad 1, pg. 98 (writing and talking).

5. Página 99 = Los números altos (Big numbers) + HANDOUT (Los números). We reviewed the uses on page 99 in the box and compared them to the ones on the PINK HANDOUT. We talked a little about bargaining in an open-air market (Un mercado del aire libre).

6. We went over the 2A test - we'll do the Spelling/Vocabulary test tomorrow.

1. Work book pp. 38 & 39 (re: text pages 98 & 99)
2. NEW White vocabulary sheet: fill-in the Spanish for the English.

6. Review of SER & ESTAR ( see page 88). Students first brainstormed with a partner over the forms and uses. Then I started showing a Power Point, and students took notes.
NEW PACKET: Ser, Estar, Tener and Haber = To Be. We highlighted the study points over Ser & Estar, and did the first practice.

7. Reviewed the corrections on the 2A test.

Workbook pages 28 & 29 = practicing the vocabulary from 2B - see page 104.

1. Students received a letter from Señor Croft and I inviting them to sign-up for Español IV.

2. I continued with the Conferencia sobre un/a artista" - finishing up my presentation of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

3. I showed my slides of La casa azul - Frida & Diego's house in Coyoacón, Mexico, D.F.

4. I shared my painter brother's website "A Mathematician's Art"

5. Student's earned their 30 minutes of Juegos en español, so since it was the end of the quarter, I added in Limonada y Palomitas de maíz and for 45 minutes the students either played games in Spanish, Watched "Los Increíbles - in Spanish with Spanish subtitles, or read the magazines of books in Spanish that are in the classroom.

NO HAY TAREA - Gracias por un cuarto muy bueno, estudiantes!

Español II el 12 de abril de 2012


1. I used two "Tell me a story" - Books without words- to talk in Spanish about a little girl getting up and ready for her day, and then coming home at night, having dinner and getting ready for bed.

2. Students drew panels to tell illustrate a similar story they told to their partners.

3. El escaleto - students labeled the parts of the body and then practiced the 5 senses, too.

4. Groups of 4 worked together to label one of their group as their "modelo" and then we took their picture.

5. We made Limonada y Palomitas de maíz and watched more of Los Increíbles.

NO HAY TAREA! Gracias por un cuarto muy bueno, estudiantes!

Español II el 06 de abril de 2012

1. WAVA Active Listening Comprehension Activities:
Act. 7 = Daily Routine of a young model compared to that of her photographer.
Afterwards, the students used this as a guide to ask/answer questions with a partner about their daily routines.

Act. 8 = Ser versus Estar: How do parents describe what their child is like (ser) compared to how the teacher reported the student was feeling today in class (estar).

Act. 9 = "Long-form" of possessives: Dad was trying to figure out whose items were left around the house (mío, tuyo, suyo).

Repaso - Tarea: Two-sided handout "Tarea #1 de verbos reflexivos". We went over the corrections together.

Hora 1era: 30 minutes of JUEGOS en español - They filled their botella! We also started "Los increíbles" - the Incredibles, en español.
Hora 2nda - watched about 10 minutes of Los increíbles

Tarea:

4. Carpeta del pasado - Started putting together the preterite & imperfect sentences written as homework, as well as the "reglas" onto the folders themselves.
