I. Lectura: Working with a partner, students read aloud Chapter 2A's opening article on page 45 & Activity 2-1 on page 47. Practicing vocabulary and structures from the lesson within the contextualized theme.

II. Práctica de escritura/comunicación - Each pair of students teamed up with another and practiced writing sentences using the sentences written as homework.

III. Estructura: Ser versus Estar = take notes on pages 49-51. I showed a Power Point, students took notes and then we did some in-class work on a new packet.

  • Sentence Activity - reverse of the handout

2. El pretérito regular

  • Regular Preterite flashcards : students got two handouts of cards for (1) Subject pronouns (2) Verb stems (3) Verb endings. They cut these apart and then organized them into like categories.
  • Mini-sentence builder activity: I wrote sentences in English using the elements from the flashcards. Students used their cards to put together the Spanish equivalent.
  • Pretérito - Tarea #1: We went over the answers to the homework handout.

3. Demonstrative Adjectives

  • Reviewed our Rima to help us remember the forms: "This and these both have Ts, That and Those no T shows, Far away? Begins with A, I don't know - ends with O".
  • New packet: Demonstrative Adjectives. We did the first two pages practicing, Este/a/os/as; Ese/a/os/as; Aquel/Aquella/os/as.

Tarea:

1. Lotería - Regular -er/-ir Preterite verbs. Fill-in this bingo-like game using answers both in Spanish and English.

2. STUDY! Preterite Conjugation Quiz tomorrow. Know the verbs on the first page of your verb grid packet - BOTH meanings and forms. Use your new flash cards from class today!

1. Warm-up: Vocabulary picture flashcards - working with a partner and their vocabulary lists, students identified which vocabulary items were portrayed in the drawings.

2. Video Historia - pp. 104-105: Students watched the video, read along in their books. This incorporates the vocabulary and structures of the lesson in a meaningful context.
Then we did Actividad 3, pg. 105 = Comprehension questions.

3. Demonstrative Adjectives = This blouse, that jacket, those pants over there. See page 114.
I introduced these terms using examples around the classroom. Next we read the grammar box on page 114 and then followed with the Gram Activa video. Last students got a blue 2-page handout with examples and drawing flash cards.

4. El pretérito
(a).We took the preterite time expressions quiz, and then corrected it.
(b) Reviewed the conjugations of the preterite, correcting our verb grid homework.
(c) Partner questions/answer practice using the Tú form in questions/answering in the Yo.

1. Review "quiz" of class procedures, grading and in-class performance expectations. See handout, "Bienvenidos a la clase de español".

2. Introduced our new lesson - 2B - !Vamos de compras! - Pronunciation and then listening/reading comprehension pp. 102-103. Got new vocabulary handout/packet - review page 124.

3. Introduced the
simple past tense - El pretérito. I demonstrated, students made observations about the structures, we read pg. 110 in our text books and then saw the GramActiva. Next we got a WHITE HANDOUT - El PRETERITO and a set of Preterite Verb grids. We learned the TIME EXPRESSIONS associated with the preterite and then began practicing writing in the forms.

Tarea:
1. 2B Flashcards: #s 1-24
2. Complete the FIRST page of the VERB GRID.
3. Memorize the TIME EXPRESSIONS for the PRETERITE - see the bottom of your verb grid and/or the white EL PRETERITO handout.

2. El imperfecto versus el pretérito - see text pp. 27-28: When to use which past tense? Also 2 handouts given today (1) El imperfecto (2) El Pretérito versus el imperfecto - read the story at the bottom of the page to see how/when to use which one.

4. Proyecto - Due this Friday (11/18/11) - Handout "Cuando era niño".
  • I introduced the project and we did the first step - deciding on a childhood incident (real or imaginary) that we can develop into a strong narration.
  • Practiced background circumstances with a T-chart of "Lo bueno/lo malo" about our lives at the time of the incident we're using.
  • Began filling in the graphic organizer in the project packet - UP to, and including, "El conflicto". This upper portion to be completed with more details as homework. We'll do the plot stages later.

3. El proyecto: Fill-in background circumstance details for: El Lugar and los personajes - remember to include details that will come into play for the "incident".

TEST! We took the 2A Exam.

Started our mini-review lesson prior to 2B, A ver si recuerdas: pp. 98-99.
  1. Students received TWO handouts: (1) AZUL - vocabulario (2) ROSADO - Los números.
  2. Students began ACT.1 - pg. 98 - to complete as homework.
  3. Practiced saying numbers 0-100 - "Timed" activity on the reverse of the Los números handout.
Tarea:
1. Finish Act. 1, pg. 98: Write 8 sentences = one for EACH of the places in the vocabulary at top of the page. Each sentence includes elements from each section of the vocabulary: Where you're going; What you're doing there; What you're buying; 2 adjectives to describe what you're buying.
Ex. Voy al centro comercial para comprar unos anteojos de sol bonitos y baratos.

2. STUDY numbers 0-100: Be ABLE to WRITE then in WORDS tomorrow = QUIZ!

Working with a partner, students read the interview (pg. 24) with a short-story writer about what is a good short story, and then answered comprehension questions in Act. 1-23, pg. 26.

Students began their homework (see below).

We continued on with our película, El fantástico señor Zorro!

Tarea:
1. Create your own vocabulary study sheet for page 25.
2. Select 10 of the vocabulary items and then for each of them write a sentence in Spanish that works as its definition.

4. I read a children's book in Spanish, Yo, solito, about a "Typical" day and what the little one could do for himself and others - reflexive versus non-reflexive verbs.

  • Partner conversations about childhood memories using the Imperfecto and practicing follow-up questioning strategies
Repaso - Las narraciones: JUEGO! Quién soy yo?:
  • We played the "parlor game" of putting the name of a character for the stories we've readon the back of each student. The students could only ask Sí/No questions to discover their identities.
  • All characters from the same story gathered together and lined-up in order of their appearances in the stories.
  • They retold the main events of their stories.

El fantástico Señor Zorro - period 1 began this and period 4 continued.

(1) Teams of FOUR - Each person acting as an expert for a different legend. Each "expert" shared his/her legend with the others - teaching them the key vocabulary and then checking for their understanding using the comprehension questions prepared as homework.
(2) We then debriefed all together.

2. Homework correction: Reflexive verbs versus regular verbs

3. 2A vocabulary test - took and scored these quizzes. Students also took a practice meaning/spelling double test to check on their own.

4. SER versus ESTAR - Reviewed the guidelines on pg. 86 and then compared these with the guidelines on our NEW PACKET. We practiced saying the example sentences for each use of Ser and Estar.

Tarea:
1. Complete the two exercises in the SER/ESTAR packet- check the guidelines to be sure you are using the correct verb.
2. WAVA 10 & 11: Practice writing about the daily routine of these people.
