Reviewed Chapter Test 1B - reviewing HOW to come up with the correct answer and WHY they are correct, as well as double checking my arithmetic skills.

Practicing the Vocabulary in context; Reporting time of day and using Reflexive Verbs to talk about daily routines.

Homework corrections:

El pretérito:
  • Activity 1-4, WB29
  • Reviewed the guidelines for MONDAY'S QUIZ: Using the preterite with the verbs of the chapter.
  • We reviewed the meanings of the chapter's verbs - see the two lists in your vocabulary packet. We added Asustarse, Disfrazarse, Vestirse with their English equivalents to the first list of verbs in English. Double check the Spanish list farther back in the packet against the English one.
  • Went over the criteria of the HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT - last page of the vocabulary packet.
  • NEW (pink) Preterite Packet - we went through all of the study notes about irregulars and spelling changes.
Los chistes:
  • Students shared their chistes in NEW groups of 4.
  • One person from each group shared a chiste with the rest of the class. Qué gracioso y divertido!
La abeja haragana:
  • In our NEW groups of 4, students real aloud part II of the story to each other.
  • If your group had time, they reviewed last night's homework.
Tarea:

Began Lesson 2A today!

1. Vocabulary in context:
  • Listened to pp. 74-75
  • New vocabulary list - page 98: Read, repeated & filled-in words
  • Listening comprehension activities: Act. 1 & 2, pg. 75
  • Grooming Articles - introduced some using props, and then we played a game - seeing who could guess the one removed from the set.
2. Reflexive Verbs - we continued on with this concept we began last Friday:
  • Demonstrated Reflexive versus Non-reflexive Daily Routine actions using dolls & grooming article props.
  • Page 80 in text book: We read the grammar tips and examples.
  • Gram Activa: we watched the video about a dog's daily routine. Ever see a dog taking a shower?
  • Verb grid - we filled in the meanings and the forms for YO.
3. Los proyectos:
I returned the scored 1B projects - it was fun reading them this weekend. Gracias, estudiantes!

Tarea:

1. LOTS of practice with the vocabulary from page 70 - with additions, too!

  • Magnetic FACES - we made crazy faces and described them.

  • I introduced REFLEXIVE VERBS (One does the action for ONESELF)
  • SONG - we began the song, "Mi cuerpo" - First verse today.
2. Page 71: Using TWO verbs together in a PHRASE
  • Reviewed the concept of "2 verbs go awalking; 1st verb "does the talking" - meaning that the 1st verb changes form for WHO is doing the action and the 2nd verb stays in the infinitive.
  • Review of GUSTAR and VERBS LIKE GUSTAR (encantar, fascinar). The little word that means who Likes/Loves/Is crazy about and how the verbs change for WHAT is liked/loved/Is crazy about.
  • Reviewed meanings of ALL of the verbs when put BEFORE and infinitive. See the box on page 71
  • Did the Top Half of the WHITE overview handout for pages 70-71.

1. Took the Prueba del vocabulario - III/6: Aplicación.
I've decided NOT to count it as a TEST, but rather as an in-class comprehension activity. Judging from the students' results, the reading comprehension piece seemed too difficult to be a true test of their knowledge of the vocabulary.

2. Continued with the summary of the article, identifying the 5 main points and then writing questions (and their answers). The groups turned these in as they completed them.
Note: Several groups finished in period 4, only 1 group did in period 1 - so we'll have just a bit more time on Monday to complete.

3. Continued, and completed, the job interview/recorded orals. I'm really proud of how well everyone did staying in Spanish and talking the whole time.

4. A few groups got to play the "Go Fish"-style card game, Elijamos una profesión.

Tarea: Están libres! - Go to the game and/or the dance this weekend. Enjoy Homecoming!

PROYECTOS!
1. Working in teams, students took turns sharing their 1B projects with each other.
2. Each team selected their "estrella" who then presented their project to the class.

REPASO - We reviewed the Lesson 1A Test.

NUEVO! - Introduced the vocabulary (and extras too) from page 70. Be sure to get the new handout - AZUL. Yes, it does have some interesting numbers - 21.5, etc.
This is one of my FAVORITE units - clothing, describing ourselves and what we regularly do as our daily routine.

Tarea:
Make flashcards for all of the items on the new vocabulary sheet.

1. WAVA written activities 9 & 10 = vocabulary practice

2. JUEGO! - "Estoy pensando en una palabra que..." White board partners writing down the words for which the other kids give the definition - based on last night's homework.

3. ORALS! - pairs went to stations in the hall to act out their situations while recording them on the digital recorders. We did 16 people in each class today - we'll continue tomorrow!

4. Artículo: Groups of 4 continued working on "Herramientas" - identifying the 5 main points and writing comprehension questions based on them.

Tarea:
Prueba del vocabulario III/6 - Aplicación. Like last Friday's quiz but with the second group of vocabulary from the green packet.

1. Warm-up: WAVA III/6 - Las profesiones
Activity 1 = Listening comprehension; Activity 8 = writing practice

2. Took and then scored the III/6 Comprehension Vocabulary Test (24 puntos).

3. Groups of 4 - Continued reading the article "Las herramientas".
The group's goal for the article is decide on the FIVE most important points and then to write a comprehension question in Spanish for each one of the FIVE points. (Total of 5 questions.)

4. Practice with recording orals - using the recorders, period 4 got to practice how to record and the system for doing recorded partner orals. We will begin those tomorrow.

Tarea:
Write 10 sentences in Spanish that work as definitions for 10 vocabulary items for the second green vocabulary sheet (SpanishIII/Capítulo 6). One sentence per vocab. item. Remember not to INCLUDE the vocabulary word in the sentence describing it.

1. Precaliento - More practice with the 20 most commonly asked questions in job interviews. #s 11-15.

2. Students turned-in their final copy of their cover letters and the process papers (rough draft with partner edits; paragraph - Where you would like to work; Partner editing handout - paragraph).

3. Job Interview Oral practice - Round Robin "jobs" in groups of four. Two people talking (Interviewer/Job applicant) and two people writing: Specialized vocabulary used & Open-ended questions posed.

4. Progress Reports distributed: Students to write TWO GOALS - (1) within a week (2) by the end of the quarter - 3 weeks. Parents to sign progress report / goals.

5. Quiz Flashcards - vocabulary practice for tomorrow's vocabulary comprehension test.

1. Warm-up: Listenening comprehension exercises - WAVA 1B, Act. 6, 7 and 8.

2. Partner game "Dedos' = can you spot the vocabulary word on the scatter sheet before your partner?

3. Partner questions/answers using the structures from 1B: Saber/Conocer, Comparisons, and "Hace --- que ---". We debriefed #s 1-10 and reviewed WHY the answers should be what they are.

4. Partner Project Editing - using the project description sheet, partners checked off how complete and accurate each others' work was on their rough draft completed as homework for today.

5. Comparisons - Reviewed the 3 types of comparisons and then the irregular comparatives/superlatives. Completed Practice G in the packet.

Precaliento - Las 20 preguntas más comunes en las entrevistas: #s 6-10.
Students answered these questions while I checked off the rough drafts of their letters. Several students had already completed the final draft and organized their process paper packets, so I collected those for some extra credit.

Oral - I introduced how use the "Elements of a conversation" scoring grid, then divided the class into groups of 4. Next 2 people played out one of the work situations and the other two captured elements of their conversation: specialized vocabulary and questioning strategies.

Lectura: New article, "Herrimientas" - workplace skills - with a glossary to help with the reading.

Period 4: We reviewed the results of last Friday's vocabulary application test.

Tarea:
1. Final typed copy of Cover Letter.
2. Practice new vocabulary - see last Friday's blog for a link.
3. Practice for orals - run imaginary scenarios and come up with what you would say.

3. Continued with Comparisons: Reviewed ALL THREE TYPES, and continued working together up to Practica G (irregulars).

4. TWO handouts to introduce the UNIT PROJECT (Final due on TUESDAY). A 6-panel illustrated story about how you and your family and/or friends spend your free time.
A. Written instructions, guidelines and grading criteria = BE SURE to include ALL information listed.

1. Sports photo flash cards - vocabulary enrichment practice: I made photo flash cards from the teaching sheets about Sports that I found in Mexico and shared them with the class since this is a big part of our new lesson.

2. Video Historia: Watched the DVD, then working with a partner, students read the script on pp. 48-49 aloud to one another, and then completed the comprehension activity 3.

3. Practiced more vocabulary by corrected homework - WB18.

4. Hace --- que ___ (See page 58)
. Introduced the "How long as ___ done ___" expression and we practiced asking our partners about how long s/he has done their favorite pastime activity.

5. We practiced the two ways of using "to know" with Activity 15, page 56.

6. Continued practicing 3 types of comparisons: first using examples comparing heights of members of the class and then going back to the packet we started yesterday.

1. Round-robin orals - We reviewed the five components of a basic conversations and then applied them using the first 5 questions of the most commonly asked ones in job interviews. Students did 4-5 rounds and a wonderful job staying in Spanish - Enbuenahora, estudiantes!

3. Reviewed/corrected yesterday's vocabulary recognition quiz (25 points).

4. Reviewed my corrections of last Friday's Lesson Exam(66 points).

1. Repaso de la tarea:
We corrected the review handout begun yesterday in class and completed as homework, in preparation of today's Lesson 1A Test.

2. JUEGO - Las palabras afirmativas/negativas
Using the cards distributed among the class, students asked and answered questions until they found the others of their "group" - sets that made sense together. Then we went through the 14 questions with students sharing their quesions/answer sets.

3. EXAMEN - we took Lesson 1A test today (75 points): Listening Comprehension and the grammar and vocabulary for this lesson we've been working on for the past two weeks.

Tarea:
1. New BLUE 1B vocabulary handout: NUMBER the vocabulary items, then make flashcards for items 1-24.
2. Blue handout - re: pages 42-43. Complete the activities practicing the uses of IR.
NOTE: DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON THE REVERSE. We'll learn about Saber versus Conocer in our new lesson 1B. (Gracias, Maddie!)

Common corrections on the Escudos compositions - Hora 1era: Handout and discussion of common English-speaker "traps" in Spanish. Keep handout and notes to refer to when doing future editing on your work. Pay attention to your "pet errors" - everyone has them!
