Spanish II 11-05-07
- Using a picture book under the document camera (Sunshine), students reviewed their daily routine vocabulary and reflexive verbs.
- Corrected the WAVA exercises 10 & 11, pages 31 & 32, practicing the reflexive verbs. See: Notes on using Reflexive verbs with Infinitive Phrases (below)
- Took Reflexive Verb Test – I went over the answers at the end of class.
- Reviewed the uses of Ser & Estar, page 86, and completed Activity 19. – See Notes on Ser & Estar (below)
- I introduced the “Stressed possessive” – where it is important to the speaker to emphasize ownership. (It is MINE) – see page 88.
- Homework:
- Green packet, Reflexive Pronouns, Exercises E & F.
- Practice Ser & Estar with WAVA exercise 12. Be sure to do BOTH PARTS: a. select the from of ser/estar and b. ANSWER the question in a complete sentence.
Reflexive verbs with Infinitive phrases (like those on page 71)
Remember: don’t change the infinitive BUT we DO change the reflexive pronoun. (me, te, se, nos, os, se)
1. I want to (take a) shower
Quiero ducharme.
2. She wants to paint her nails.
Ella quiere pintarse las uñas.
Necesitamos prepararnos.
Tú piensas vestirte.

Ser – to be (traits = essence)
Mnemonic Device:
DOTS – Date, Origin, Time = Ser
The uses of SER:
- What a person on thing is (identifies the noun)
Identifies the noun; Ser works like an equal sign
María = rubia; María es rubia
- What a person or thing is like (defining characteristics/traits)
- Where a person or thing is from (origin)
- What a thing is made of (origin)
- To whom something belongs (expressing possession – it is mine= Es mío)
- Profession = Soy maestra; Uds. son estudiantes.

Estar – to be (state of being)
Mnemonic devices-
(1) ELFS – Estar = Location, Feelings
(2) “No matter HOW you FEEL, or WHERE you ARE,
Always use the verb ESTAR”
(3) Mary Had a Lamb (and a Pig)
Mood, Health adj., Location, and Progressives.
(Progresive: Estoy hablando= I am talking.)
